Buying a used clarinet
A used clarinet can often be as good as buying a clarinet new. The used option is often the only way a student clarinet player can afford to buy a better clarinet than the one they already own. However, there are a few precautions to take before buying a used instrument.
Before looking for your new clarinet, do some research. If you know what make/brand of clarinet you want to buy, or have seen a second-hand clarinet advertised, look around to see how much it would cost you to buy the clarinet new – never assume just because the clarinet is for sale used that you are buying a bargain!
Make sure that you have a chance to play the clarinet before you think about buying it. If you are only a beginner, take along someone who plays the clarinet to test it for you. All of the keys should work freely, and there should be no breathy or windy sounds (take along a reed you have used before so you know it is not the reed). Check the clarinet for damage, and also check that the corks are in good condition.
If you are buying an advanced or professional clarinet, or a specialty instrument such as a basset horn, ask the owner if they have a record of when the clarinet has been serviced or repaired in the past. Don’t be afraid to say no if you are worried the clarinet might need repairs – a used instrument is not a bargain if you end up having to pay a lot of money to have it in a playable state.
