Learn to play the clarinet
Deciding to learn to play the clarinet
Choosing to learn to play the clarinet is a popular option with many first time music students. The clarinet is a relatively simple instrument to play basic tunes on, and the clarinet player has opportunities to play in many types of ensembles, including orchestras, marching bands and jazz combos. If you are unsure if the clarinet is for you, however, there are a few points to consider before you commit to learning this great instrument.
A consideration for younger potential clarinet players is the physical requirements. Most students start when they are 10 or 11. Many younger students find that they simply do not have hands big enough to cover the keys and holes on the clarinet, and also often do not have the arm strength to hold the clarinet for very long. Teachers also advocate waiting to this age as the teeth can have an impact on how clarinetists play, and often think it is a good idea not to start to learn how to play until all teeth have come through.
It is also a good idea to think about why you want to learn to play this instrument, the clarinet, rather than any other. While learning to play because your friends do might seem a good idea now, the novelty will probably start to wear off once you have to practice and attend band rehearsals. If you know you want to play an instrument, but don’t know much about the clarinet, try listening to some recordings. Often clarinetists will say that it was listening to the expressive and agile sound of the clarinet that made them decide to learn how to play in the first place.
