Clarinet Technique

Clarinet technique: how are you going to play?

There are many books about clarinet technique available for the clarinet player who wants to improve their playing or overcome certain problems they have. Your clarinet teacher may recommend a certain book or system to help you with your technique. One of the most important elements for improving your technique, no matter what book you work from or system you follow, is to make sure you practice properly and long enough.

Much of clarinet playing comes down to finger technique as agility and speed will only come as you can move your fingers on the clarinet properly. This only comes with practice, and exercises that improve these techniques should be included in every practice session. Scales are very useful for working on finger technique, as well as improving many other aspects of playing. Working on your fingering is important for clarinetist as it is a vital aspect of learning to play ‘over the break’ smoothly. Once your fingering technique begins to improve, you should see the results flow into other aspects of your clarinet playing, such as your etudes, studies and music you are learning for band or orchestra.

The other aspect of technique when it comes to clarinet is sound production. There are various techniques that a good clarinetist will work to master, including articulation, breathing and more advanced techniques such as playing microtones and multiphonics. A good teacher will make sure that the exercises and pieces set for a player continue to introduce new techniques as the clarinetist ability improves.
