The Clarinet Teacher
Choosing a clarinet teacher
Choosing a clarinet teacher is an important decision for a player of any level. Nothing will have more influence on your clarinet playing than your teacher, with a good teacher able to develop your abilities to the highest level.
Many beginner student clarinet players do not have a choice of teachers – they have the teacher who works at their school, often a general teacher of woodwind or concert band instruments. This is not necessarily a disadvantage at such an early stage – while clarinet technique is important at this early stage, much of the learning experience is also about learning the basics of music theory and playing in ensembles. Many talented clarinetists did not have a specialist teacher until they left high school and went on to a specialized music school.
However, many students decide that they need a teacher who specializes in clarinet once they get to an intermediate level. If you have a choice of teachers in your area, there are a few points that can help you get the best teacher for you. The first thing to do is ask around – who do other players and teachers recommend? Also decide what style of playing and learning you are after. Do you want to learn jazz or classical playing? Do you think that you want to work towards university level musical training, or do you just want to learn to play for your own entertainment? Do you want to learn from a professional player who is taking students, or from someone who specializes in teaching only? Remember, you should feel comfortable with your teacher, and can always ask for a trial period before committing yourself to a long-term learning plan.
