Clarinet Playing

Clarinet playing is not necessarily a difficult art. Though as any clarinet player will tell you, while the clarinet is not necessarily a difficult instrument to play, it is a difficult instrument to play well. If you want to be one of those who play the clarinet well, there are some steps you will need to take.

Firstly, you will need to learn the importance of practice. As boring as it can seem sometimes, every player needs to practice on a regular basis if they are ever to improve. If you want to be a good player, you will have to devote your practice to more than just learning the clarinet music you need to know for band practice or your next lesson.

Good practice includes working on your scales and other technical exercises, and working through difficult passages on pieces you are learning, or plan on learning in the future. As the saying goes ‘practice makes perfect’.

Another aspect that can make the difference between average playing and great playing is having a good clarinet teacher. Many students start their clarinet experience learning as part of a group, often with other types of instruments.

This is fine for beginners, but if you are serious about wanting to develop as a clarinetist, you are going to need one on one lessons with a teacher who is a clarinet specialist. Often this is not an option for many players in smaller towns, but if you are committed it is worth seeking out even one lesson with a good specialist teacher, even if it requires you to travel.
