Clarinet Lessons: doing the groundwork

Doing the groundwork for clarinet lessons

While many things can have an impact on the quality of clarinet lessons – the clarinet teacher, the clarinet books or system being used to teach the student, even the room that the lesson is being given in – the most important thing that will impact on a lesson is the preparation done by the student before the lesson. Here are some tips to make sure that you get the most out of your lesson every time, no matter what level of study on the clarinet you are at.

The most important thing that will impact on the lessons for any musician is practice. Even if you only have lessons once a week, your clarinet practice should be a daily ritual, or at least done every week day. Practicing the clarinet is about more than perfecting a piece so it is ready for the next lesson. It is about technique, it is about sound production and it about some things most clarinetists find boring – scales and arpeggios. So why can’t a clarinet student spend their time just learning nice pieces of music?

Learning the basics of music, such as scales and arpeggios has at least two benefits. Firstly, it means that you are putting into practice on your clarinet the music theory that you are probably learning – there is not much use being able to rattle off the notes in a scale if you don’t really know what it sounds like. And other advantage of learning scales and arpeggios is that you are increasing your technical ability – if you are able to play the more technically difficult scales, you are gaining skills that will help you with difficult pieces.
