Clarinet accessories: the hidden costs
The hidden costs: clarinet accessories
While buying a clarinet is an important decision, a clarinetist also has to consider the cost and quality of clarinet accessories when budgeting for the overall cost of their clarinet. There are various accessories that will need to be purchased, some on a regular basis, others will perhaps be a once only experience.
The clarinet accessory that a clarinet player will find themselves needing to buy most often is clarinet reeds. Choosing the right reed is a very important decision for any clarinetist. The choice of reed will have an impact on the sound of your clarinet playing. The strength of the reed is usually printed on the reed.
The strength of the reed will determine the resistance of the reed. While some resistance is required to produce a good controlled tone, a reed that is too strong can result in a ‘windy’ sound, and beginners can find strong reeds to difficult to use. Usually a beginner will start with a strength 2; a professional will usually use a strength 4 or above. A clarinetist should have more than one reed and rotate their use regularly. Reeds should be thrown out if chipped or split, or if they are more than three months old.
Other important accessories all clarinetists should own are cleaning equipment (pull through cleaning cloths are a minimum), a good clarinet case and younger players could consider a support strap to help hold the clarinet. A beginner should also budget the cost of accessories such as thumb pads and perhaps a new music stand when calculating the costs of buying everything to start learning clarinet.
