Bundy Clarinet: the affordable revolution

The favorite student clarinet for players around the world, the Bundy clarinet has remained a favorite due to its combination of great price for good playing quality.

The history of the Bundy name and clarinets is part of the story of French instrument maker Selmer. It was a Selmer employee, George Bundy, who grew the business in the United States. The clarinet known as the Bundy Resonite model 1400 was released in 1948 and was a revolution in clarinet making.

This affordable clarinet was developed after the Selmer (Paris) BT clarinet but was made from molded resonate. This model has remained popular since its inception, with one million 1400s sold by 1978, and sales continue to grow nearly sixty years after the first clarinet came off the production line.

So why do teachers and band directors continue to recommend a Bundy to student players despite the expansion of budget clarinets available to beginner to mid-level players. Firstly, Bundy is an instrument that is known to most repairers and music accessories suppliers, which means the Bundy owner should have no problem getting replacement parts or repairs when needed.

Secondly, a Bundy is a clarinet that gives good ‘bang for your buck’ – the 1400 is not a professional standard clarinet, but for the price you should be asked for it (a reconditioned 2nd hand Bundy suitable for a beginner should be available for US$200) it is a quality instrument. These instruments are also renowned for being hardy, near unbreakable clarinets.
