The Beginner Clarinet
A beginner clarinet has to fulfill a few different criteria – they have to be able to make a clarinet player sound good early to avoid the beginner giving up, but also have to be priced so that the new clarinetist is not put off by the price.
Whether the beginner buys their clarinet used or new, it should be in good condition so that time is not wasted on repairs. And a clarinet for a beginner often has to be hardy enough to avoid being broken when carried to and from school, lessons and band rehearsals.
Many manufacturers produce clarinets aimed at the beginner player, both in terms of cost and function. Most of these clarinets will be made of a synthetic composite material, rather than wooden. This can be a bonus for the beginner, as a clarinet made from wood needs extra care that a beginner may not be willing to take on. Most students will start learning on a B flat clarinet, and manufacturers that make clarinets of this type for beginners include Yamaha, Artley and Armstrong.
Some parents prefer to buy a used clarinet for their son or daughter who is just starting out on the clarinet, but this is not always the cheaper option if the clarinet is not in good condition or not suitable for the student – for instance, some parents will buy a 13 key clarinet for their child, not knowing that students no longer learn on these instruments. If the cost is a consideration, parents should always ask the school if they have a leasing or borrowing problem that their child could be part of.
